Integra et Klima: Climate Protection as a Strategy to Promote Integration

© FH Dortmund (Projektpartner)

Migrants in the focus of environmental education: The Integra et Klima project links relevant aspects of personal carbon footprint and climate protection with the acquisition of a new language and vocational qualification measures. The teaching materials are available online.

The Integra et Klima project was launched three years ago with the aim of developing teaching formats for integration and work-related language courses in order to impart more environmental and climate protection skills to migrants.

In cooperation with the project manager Marcel Hunnecke of the FH Dortmund and his team as well as experts from the Multicultural Forum e. V., teaching materials on climate change and climate protection in the everyday areas of living and working, mobility, food and drink and consumption were developed. The materials provide basic information and strategies for everyday life and have been tested in several integration courses throughout Germany. Their practical applicability in class was ensured by continuous feedback loops with the lecturers and the effectiveness and at-tractiveness of the materials was assessed among the participants in a multi-stage evaluation process.

The evaluation showed small CO2 savings for those who participated in the integration courses, while the carbon footprint of the control group increased. The teaching materials are available for free download from Oekom-Verlag.
