IZT – Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment Berlin

IZT – Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment was founded by pioneers of futurology in 1981 in Berlin. Since then, researchers at IZT have been contributing towards establishing the field of participatory future studies in Germany. Goals of the ecological movement and, since the 1990s, the guiding principle of sustainable development, provide the foundations of the institute’s research activities. Since August 2013, IZT is part of a consortium that runs the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag. IZT contributes to the office with its expertise in organizing and analyzing social dialogs and discourses.

For nearly fourty years, IZT has been carrying out research on the opportunities for and threats to society, ecology and economy that are associated with emerging technologies. In doing so, the institute also demonstrates how to put concepts of acting sustainably into practice. IZT closely cooperates with ministries, foundations, industry associations, companies and representatives of civil society.
